Use design thinking to build a personal knowledge system

Based on my own experience, the author applies design thinking and design methods to build a personal knowledge system. Build a body of knowledge by identifying requirements, defining problems, creating ideas, prototyping products, and improving them.

I am a person who plans to love column, there are countless plans, especially New Year’s plan, study plan, financial plan and so on. However, the implementation is always powerless, and in the end, it has no choice but to let it go. Week after week…

In 2019, there are new changes in life, I hope to be able to make a plan that will be implemented to the end! But time flies, and it’s already the second quarter in the blink of an eye, so forget it if you want.

But I couldn’t bear it anymore, so I started to implement it, started to analyze and sort out, and finally concluded something unexpected (the personal knowledge system in the figure below). Although the professional knowledge system has been sorted out before, it always feels fragmented for the overall development of the individual. After forming a relatively complete personal knowledge system, many things are self-evident, and it becomes easier to formulate phased goals and plans.

So, I try to sort out the process of building my personal knowledge system and share it with interested students.

If this body of knowledge is a product, can design thinking and design methods be used?

Unconsciously, I found myself doing exactly that.

Use design thinking to build a personal knowledge system

1. Empathy, understanding the needs of users

Usually in experience design, the object of the interview is often the user. Sometimes according to the type of the product, I imagine myself as a user, but I have never tried to design a product based on my personal needs. It is undoubtedly an interesting attempt. .

The above content is based on the empathy map compiled from the conversations I have with myself. The difficulty lies in finding out what our heart really needs, because our minds often deceive themselves too.

For self-interviews, the parts of speaking and doing are not very easy to distinguish, so here you can directly adjust and merge SAY and DO, then this empathy map becomes a three-dimensional DO, THINK, and FEEL (no adjustment will be made here).

As you can see from the picture, I am a person who loves to learn. I often make goals and plans, but I can’t execute them well.

It seems that what I need is a plan that can be effectively implemented, but in fact it is because of lack of personal awareness, failure to grasp the needs of the main body, and overestimation of my ability, so I often set goals and plans that cannot be completed, thus Make yourself frustrated. If things go on like this, they will either be insensitive and self-deprecating, or they will gradually lose their self-confidence. At the same time, goals and plans do not have continuity, and each time they are newly created according to the interests, needs, and things being dealt with at the time, which is not conducive to the long-term development of individuals.

2. Define, reorganize and define the problem in a human-centered manner

Through interviews with myself, I have a deeper understanding and understanding of my own demands. Describe the problem in one sentence at the definition stage:

who? what do you need? What did I find? (User User, Requirement Need, Insight Insight)

According to the expression in the POV template, the definition problem is organized as:

An adult who pursues personal growth and development needs to formulate effective learning goals and plans based on his own knowledge system, and constantly improve and perfect himself.

3. Creativity

Imagination, divergent thinking in the creative stage to generate many ideas or ideas. This is a very critical step. In product design, it is often the process of products from scratch and from good to good.

The most commonly used method of ideation is brainstorming.

1) Thinking divergence from several dimensions

Want to learn something? What book do you like to read? What are your hobbies? Which keywords touch my nerves?

2) According to the divergent content, classify and sort

This process is completely dependent on personal cognition and habits, using the language that you can understand best, and using the classification dimension that you think is the most suitable.

Primary classification: image management, financial management, professional knowledge, physical and spiritual growth, interest management, others. Professional knowledge is easily misunderstood with the major of study, so it is changed to career development; the word interest is too broad, and finally adjusted to entertainment; those who have not yet figured out how to classify the content are tentatively set to other.

Here you can do 1-3 rounds of progressive divergence sorting as needed, and each time will be closer to the core needs.

4. Prototyping, designing product prototypes and/or solutions to problems

After the third stage IDEATE process, for the product, a basic conceptual model will be generated, and a relatively detailed solution should be designed in the prototype stage.

The left side of the above figure is the further sorting and output of the concepts generated in the innovation link, and the right side is the knowledge learning map sorted out in the early stage (classified according to the reading content of Douban), and its content overlaps in many places. Aiming at the screening and combing of the two, the initial prototype of the personal knowledge system was finally formed (as shown in the figure below).

The personal knowledge system is not a single list of knowledge points. It is an interconnected network structure. It is extremely complicated to sort out the relationship between nodes. Therefore, only a few major node relationships in the system are briefly described. Carding to form a system.

In addition, each node in the system may be further refined. Through continuous accumulation and learning, new knowledge directions and goals will be generated and accumulated in the system. Therefore, the personal knowledge system is constantly changing and developing.

5. Test/validate the design prototype and improve the solution

This is a process of continuous iteration and adjustment, which is tested in practice, problems are found, and improvements are iteratively improved.

So how to verify the personal knowledge system?

The best way is to establish staged development goals and plans based on the personal knowledge system, and implement them in an orderly manner. If problems are discovered, they can be adjusted in time. In the process of work and life, if there are new needs or new ideas, they can be enriched to the individual after evaluation. In the knowledge system, waiting for the practical verification of the next stage.

Use design thinking to build a personal knowledge system

The above is the whole process of building the entire knowledge system, and its formation process is accidental and inevitable. Knowledge systems vary from person to person and have commonalities, but there are more differences, and the existence of these differences determines the differences in individual development.

Don’t say you don’t understand design thinking, if you are interested, you can also follow this method to build a unique knowledge system that belongs to you.
