In order to design products that users love, we collect user needs, but should we include them in the future construction of a reference opinion library?
Does the product design have to cater to all the needs of users?
Most users don’t know what they need, don’t cater to it but shape it.
For example, when we were living in the era of push-button mobile phones, no one knew that they would be so inseparable from full-screen smartphones in ten years. It’s just that after the advent of full-screen mobile phones, people gradually came to know, accept, get used to, and finally rely on the excitement of new things. When we chatted on QQ ten years ago, few people expected a more convenient instant messaging application. But the smartest thing about Tencent is that it launched WeChat, the leader of domestic mobile social applications at the right time. When we are watching the increase in the number of space visits on Qzone, few people expect that Moments and Weibo will be so richer than the space.
Do you know exactly which type and genre of songs you like?
The masses are non-professional listeners, and they don’t even have an idea about the basic types of music. Wouldn’t it be difficult for them to answer? The smart answer may be to limit your favorite range by enumerating. It’s easy to understand. I can easily name ten songs that I like in a certain period and ten singers that I feel have a lot of feeling. Then this information can give the questioner a basic indirect hint, and the answerer’s specific answer lies in Within the scope of these premises.
In other words, users are often not clear about their preferences . Preference itself is an external indirect reaction of conscious habit. I am not sure if I am willing to try new things, but what I know is that I prefer to choose the hotel I have stayed in when I travel. This implies that I do not belong to a person who is very willing to try new things, at least in terms of travel and accommodation.
The significance of understanding this is not to ask the other party to give a clear answer to the demand, but to collect the demand information in a more “non-sense” way.
On the other hand, the demand clearly put forward by the user is not necessarily such an important and precious supreme command. Of course, it does not deny that many clear requirements are correct and necessary, but the trade-off lies in objective and insensible analysis rather than relying on the user as the king. Therefore, product design does not necessarily have to cater to the needs of users.
How to understand user-centered design without meeting all real needs
User-centered design does not take users as the top leaders, and believes that what users require is always correct and reasonable. It is not the product that meets all needs, but the slave.
The user is the center of the design, which aims to remind us to respect the rationality of the design. I agree with the idea of making a product design that is well-founded. Responding to user-centered claims is also based on well-founded needs. So I don’t think there is a contradiction between user-centric design and not satisfying all user needs. On the contrary, the focus of user-centered design is on user needs, I think it is better to put the user itself. In other words, when users themselves can’t express their own needs, how can they be truly considered and favored?
We must know that the goal of design is to win the love of users, realize the value of the product, and reap the results of the design effort. So there is no need to treat the user as a design consultant, but more effectively as a lover.
For example, when we try to manage a relationship well, we don’t directly ask the other party “what do you want?” What do you really like, what do you want me to do for you. And only the other person’s heartfelt happiness will have the possibility of pursuing success and joining hands for a lifetime.
Digression
I didn’t think that science and engineering and humanities and history have a necessary intersection, but when I was objectively analyzing things, understanding products, and examining myself, I finally learned that the Ministry of Education requires nine-year compulsory education that all subjects must be studied and comprehensive. The good intentions of the knowledge base. I have written about data-driven design, and at the same time I agree with the view that decisions are not made based on data and appearance. above.
