Design for “details”: make “design” more refined

The details should be implicit and included in the whole. Good details are not easy to be noticed by the user’s eyes, and will only make the user feel very smooth and comfortable. One sentence to describe it is: moisten things silently.

Details will appear in every scene of the product design, although it is only to complete a function and accomplish one thing, it can also be interesting.

When we find out the function that the user is currently using, we can find a way to deal with the details so that people can complete the things they are dealing with more conveniently and efficiently; when we find that the user is using a function that they don’t like, but When you have to use it, you should go through a kind of detailed processing, so that users no longer use the functions they don’t like, or at least make these functions more interesting.

When you consider how to design a detail, don’t think of it as a separate action or task. What you have to think about is what kind of user experience you want to achieve, and how the interface changes if you want to achieve it.

For example, the alarm clock app of the Apple system is a simple and intuitive example that simplifies the use scene through every detail, so that users do not think too much when setting the alarm clock and are not easy to make mistakes. Among them, the “repeat” setting is a very delicate design. When you continuously select Monday to Friday, the “repeat” module will automatically be recognized as: “working day”. For poor office workers, this thoughtful design will make us suddenly feel that the alarm clock “understands” us after the setting is over.

As you saw in the previous case, the detail does not have a single role, it usually plays multiple roles. Sometimes you can’t express it accurately, but it does increase the sense of participation in the interaction all the time.

The details can be an integral part of the product or the entire product. Including: copywriting, animation, design, interaction, color matching, notification, etc. The design of a product depends on how the smallest part of the product is designed. These tiny details can give users a very intimate and refined feeling. Handling the details is the key to achieving a project. Detail processing is an important part of the design that cannot be ignored.

We can look at the following chestnuts:

  • The “Read More” App will put the books you read recently on the top of the shelf;
  • The “zaker” App will gray out the messages that have been read;
  • The “Starbucks” App will light up the interface on the page of swiping the membership card.

Among the many design details, white space and animation are the points I want to focus on today. One is about four or two, and the other is slow work and meticulous work. They are all worth sitting down and savoring.

Make blank more natural

The meaning of appropriate white space in design has gradually changed from increasing information to decreasing information. The purpose is simple: highlight the key points in the interface.

Usually people think that adjacent objects must be related. Then we should realize in the design: “The distance between irrelevant content should be large, and the distance between related content should be small”. If you want to use lines or boxes to separate content, first try whether you can achieve the effect by adjusting only the spacing. Many designs now tend to simplify operations and incorporate detailed experience into complex functions. Simple and straightforward is the key. Straightforward language, clear fonts, bright colors, structured design, and excellent execution are all much stronger than over-decoration. For example, “want to go” App.

Make “animation” more colorful

Enhance experience comfort, make changes quietly, and weaken the inevitable discomfort without being noticed by users. In current product design, everyone knows how to use animation to enhance the product experience. From booting to functional operation, the animation is fully utilized to reasonably reflect the characteristics of the product. Of course, animation is also a double-edged sword. We should also consider the performance of research and development while working hard to improve the product experience. The game between experience and performance is the game. The detail of animation is an aspect that best reflects the product manager’s skills. .

When mobile phone sliding becomes a familiar operation for users, it has become a trend in product design to use the most instinctive operations to implement common behaviors, and to use predictive feelings to help users reduce operational thinking and reduce usage costs. For example, the “reply” function of QQ mailbox, the user only needs to slide the screen gently, and a large content-filled box will appear. A simple and unified downward pull-down action can complete the core task of replying to emails.

Details are everywhere. As long as we make products carefully, make good use of tools and methods, and use small details freely to practice and experience, the design work of product managers will be more compelling. Details can improve our quality of life and user experience. Once life lacks detailed design, we discover that these small changes are so beautiful.
