The difference between 2 phase and 3 phase stepper motor

2-phase-1.8° step angle

This is a popular hybrid stepping motor in the market, which is in great demand. It has a wide range of products and can be selected according to different torque, speed and accuracy requirements. Because of the huge market demand and stock of products, related supporting 2-phase drivers are very common and inexpensive.

The basic driving method is to let the motor do full-step drive, the driver adds full current, and sequentially excites the motor windings, so that the motor runs in full-step stepping mode. When the motor is running at different pulse frequencies, there may be different sounds, and resonance will occur at a certain speed. These problems will not be a problem in most applications. If these problems are really encountered in the application, they can also be solved by the micro-step driving method to make the output torque of the motor more stable. In many cases, the resonance speed range can be easily avoided by the design of the driver.

The 2-phase 0.9° stepper motor and the 3-phase 1.2° stepper motor are especially suitable for applications that require higher accuracy or require smoother and quieter operation.

2-phase-0.9° step angle

Because the step angle is only half of the 1.8° stepper motor, the 0.9° stepper motor has a higher resolution and runs more smoothly. The driver of the 0.9° stepper motor is exactly the same as the driver of the 1.8° stepper motor. Under the condition of the same motor running speed, the pulse frequency applied to the 0.9° stepper motor must be twice that of the 1.8° stepper motor, which causes the output torque of the 0.9° stepper motor to decrease in the high-speed range. Of course, in many applications, the high-speed section is not used. If necessary, increasing the drive voltage can increase the torque in the high-speed section. A typical application of the 0.9° stepper motor of the

14HK series 0.9° stepper motor

is a security camera. The 0.9° stepper motor can make the camera run smoothly and accurately without causing the camera to shake and cause the image to be blurred.

3 phase-1.2° step angle

The inherent advantages of a 3-phase motor are smaller torque fluctuations and smoother operation. A 3-phase motor driver is different from a 2-phase motor driver. Compared with a 2-phase 1.8° motor, a 3-phase motor has a smaller torque in the low-speed range. Through design improvements, this difference has been made very small. The high-speed torque is also very close.
